Lund – How to get there?

Lund is a student-filled city in the southern part of Sweden. Lund University was established in 1666 and is located in the heart of the city, but is now extending to the outskirts with major research facilities: MAX IV, a synchrotron source, and ESS, the new European Spallation Source.

By air

To reach Lund, the most convenient international airport is Copenhagen airport Kastrup CPH. It is located in Denmark but there is a direct train (see next heading) linking the airport to Sweden and the city center of Lund.

If you instead chose to land at Malmö airport MMX, a smaller regional airport, you will need to first reach Malmö by bus (see below) and then take the train to Lund.

By train

The Lund Central Station (Lund C) welcomes many train lines and unless you drive, this will be your access to the city!

From Copenhagen airport

There is a shared train line between Denmark and Sweden, operated by Öresundståg, which crosses the Öresund channel. From the airport, you can directly board a train (in the direction of Sweden, platform 1!). Unless the end station announced is Malmö, all the trains will go to Lund C. The trip takes about 40 minutes and costs 180 SEK or 109 DK (about 16 EUR or 17 USD) in 2nd class.

During the day, there is approximately a train every 15-20 minutes. The frequency slows down at night but the line runs 24/7. There is no seat reservation in these trains, just sit wherever you want (according to your booking class). Large luggage spaces are available at regular intervals in the train and there is also a silent zone. Bikes are welcome on board!

There are random border checks at the Hyllie station (first stop in Sweden coming from Denmark) so make sure to have a passport at hand.

It is mandatory to have a ticket before you board the train as there is no sales of tickets on board. The best way to purchase a ticket if through the mobile app Skånetrafiken via card. It is available in both Google Play and the App store. This app covers the entire Scania area, including Lund and Malmö.

The other option is to purchase a ticket at one of the machines at the airport. There are a couple of them located in the arrival hall, close to the ramp leading down to the platform 1. At Lund C, there are also a few machines right be the entrance of the station.

To check the timetable of the trains, you can consult the website:
https://www.oresundstag.se/

To enjoy the best view when crossing the Öresund bridge, find a seat on the right side of the train in the direction of travel (to Sweden)!

From Copenhagen central station

When traveling from Copenhagen city center, you should take the same train as people coming from the airport, but three stations earlier: Köbenavn H. The trip costs the same but is now 53 minutes long. Make sure to purchase the correct ticket in the app or at the machine.

Copenhagen is a really nice city to explore on the weekend if you are not in a hurry to come back home after the conference!

Other train lines

SJ (Statens Järnvägar) is the Swedish state railway, which covers the whole Sweden. SJ high speed trains directly link Lund C to Copenhagen Central Station, Gothenburg and Stockholm. Reservations are mandatory on these trains and bikes are not allowed on board.

There is also a direct night train between Berlin and Stockholm, which stops in Lund C. Book a bed and enjoy the green ride across three European countries!

Visit the SJ website for more information about timetable and tickets: https://www.sj.se/en

Another train company also operates through Lund C with fewer departures but lower price tag: https://www.snalltaget.se/en

To move around Scania, a network of regional trains, called Pågatåg, are available and connect Lund to other main cities such as Malmö (also accessible with Öresundståg) or Ystad (a spa day at the beach maybe?). Tickets can be purchased through the Skånetrafiken app. Skånetrafiken offers a “Summer ticket” valid from June 15th to August 15th, which covers the entire Scania region and leaves you free to explore our beautiful region 🙂 Bikes are welcome on board out of rush hours times.

By car

Driving from Denmark to Lund can be a bit expensive as there is a toll to cross the Öresund bridge. See prices here: https://www.oresundsbron.com/en/prices

If you prefer to take a taxi from Copenhagen airport to Lund, it will cost you about 1500 DK (about 200 EUR). This might not include the crossing fare for the bridge.

Uber does not operate in Denmark but operates in Sweden.

There are a number of ferry lines connecting Baltic countries, Denmark and Germany to Sweden if you plan to take your car with you and are looking for cheaper or more scenic options.

By bus

If you arrive by air through Malmö airport, you can take a bus to Malmö: https://www.flygbussarna.se/en/malmo. It stops both in Triangeln and Malmö Centralstation, where you can catch a regional train to Lund C (see “By train” section). It takes about 40 to 50 minutes. The bus ticket costs 139 SEK (about 12 EUR) and can be purchased on the website or through the Flygbussarna app. It is possible to buy the ticket from a machine at the airport or on board the bus, only by card.

There is a FlixBus regular service between Copenhagen and Lund, operating about four times a day. The starting price is 89 SEK (about 8 EUR) but additional charges are required for luggage and seat selection. The trip takes between 1 hour 50 minutes and 2 hours. The bus terminal is a bit far off the city center, at Carsten Nieburhs Gade 30, 1577 København.

More info on the FlixBus app and webpage.

By bike

Cycling across the Öresund bridge is not allowed, even for the adventurous ones and you cannot walk either 🙁

But you can take your bike on the train!
